Sebastian Thrun
Thrun, like Google founder Larry Page, was interested in self-driving cars. In 2005, Thrun took part with his model in the “Grand Challenge 2005”, an important competition under the auspices of the US military research agency Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). With the Stanford Racing Team he developed the autonomous VW Touareg “Stanley”, which won the DARPA Grand Challenge worth two million US dollars in 2005.
In 2007, the Stanford Racing Team, under his leadership, took part in the DARPA Urban Challenge with the VW Passat “Junior,” which also drove autonomously, and the vehicle successfully finished in second place.
