In mid-1924, Willstätter was elected president of the German Chemical Society in Berlin for two years, succeeding Fritz Haber; His deputies in these two electoral periods were Max Bodenstein, Heinrich Wieland, Willy Marckwald and Fritz Raschig.

In 1938, Richerd Kuhn was appointed “leader” of the German Chemical Society. In 1940, during the Second World War, he became head of the organic chemistry department within the German Research Foundation.

On December 5, 1942, on the 75th anniversary of the German Chemical Society, he gave a speech that concluded with the following words:

"We remember the men in whose hands the common fate lies. A triple victory to the Duce, the Tenno and our leader!"
