Königreich Irak
The Hashemite Kingdom of Iraq existed. It emerged after the First World War from the former Ottoman Vilâyet Baghdad and other areas of the collapsed Ottoman Empire and was initially under a British mandate. The first king was Faisal I of the Hashemite dynasty, who was enthroned in 1921. In 1932, Iraq gained formal independence from Great Britain and became a member of the League of Nations.
The monarchy was characterized by political tensions, military interventions and growing nationalism. On July 14, 1958, King Faisal II was overthrown and killed during a military coup. With the proclamation of the Republic, the Kingdom of Iraq ended.
