The systematic murder began on January 18, 1940 in Grafeneck in a gas chamber disguised as a shower room, which was located in a "garage": the institutional doctor let carbon monoxide flow into the gasification room. The gas came from the IG Color Industry at the Ludwigshafen plant (BASF).
