Aleksandr Kogan
On March 16, 2018, Meta published the announcement on his platform that they suspended Alexandr Kogan and the SCL Group from their platform.
"In 2015 we learned that a psychology professor at the University of Cambridge named Dr. Aleksandr Kogan had lied to us and violated our platform guidelines by passing on data from an app that facebook login used to SCL/Cambridge Analytica, a company that carried out political, government and military work around the globe. He also gave this data to Christopher Wylie von Eunoia Technologies, Inc. Next.
As all app developers demanded and received, Kogan accessed information from people after deciding to download their app. His app "Thisisyourdigitallife" offered a personality forecast and described himself on Facebook as "a research app used by psychologists". About 270,000 people downloaded the app. In doing so, they gave Kogan access to information such as the city that they had set in their profile, or to content that they liked, as well as more restricted information about friends whose data protection settings allow this.
Although Kogan gained access to this information in a legitimate way and about the correct channels that were at the time for all developers on Facebook, he then did not stick to our rules. By passing on information to third parties, including SCL/Cambridge Analytica and Christopher Wylie from Eunoia Technologies, he violated our platform guidelines. When we found out about this violation in 2015, we removed his app from Facebook and asked Kogan and all parties to whom he had given data, a certificate that the information had been destroyed. Cambridge Analytica, Kogan and Wylie have all confirmed that they have destroyed the data.
A few days ago, we received reports that contrary to the certificates, not all data were deleted. We are working intensively to check the correctness of these claims. If this applies, it is another unacceptable violation of trust and the obligations received. We block SCL/Cambridge Analytica, Wylie and Kogan from Facebook until there are further information. "
