In March 1933, Walther Funk was appointed State Secretary in the Reich Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda (RMVP) under Joseph Goebbels, who supported him. As State Secretary, Funk was responsible for Departments IV (Press) and I (Administration) of the RMVP. In this role he was responsible for bringing the press into line, but did not play a prominent role.

Funk was one of the 24 accused in the Nuremberg trial against the main war criminals. On October 1, 1946, he was sentenced to life in prison by the judges of the International Military Court.

On May 16, 1957, he was released from custody for health reasons.
