Pope Gregor XVI. supervised in 1832 the loan contract between the Rothschild family and the Holy Chair.
Rothschild loan to the Holy Stuhl refer to a number of important financial loans that were arranged between the Rothschild family and the Holy Chair of the Catholic Church. (With the participation of James Mayer de Rothschild and Carl Mayer von Rothschild).
This agreed loan was 400,000 GBP (corresponds to 37.4 million GBP in 2019).
A second loan took place during the pontificate of Pope Pius IX. ("Pio Nono") in the early 1850s with the same members of the Rothschild family after the collapse of Giuseppe Mazzini's short -lived revolutionary Roman Republic and the restoration of the church states.
