Franz I. Stephan (HRR)
In 1736, Franz Stephan married Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria, the only heiress of Emperor Charles VI, and with her founded the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. Since 1740 he was their co-regent in the Habsburg hereditary lands, but was hardly involved in government affairs. He therefore devoted himself to successful financial transactions and the promotion of natural sciences.
