Hertz Foundation
During the Cold War, Hertz established the Hertz Foundation to support military research. However, his friend Edward Teller persuaded him to let his foundation support teaching in applied research. The Hertz Foundation program is managed primarily by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory scientists associated with the development of defense programs against nuclear weapons and surface-to-surface missiles. For his significant contributions to the security of the United States, Hertz received the highest civilian award from the US Department of Defense in 1958.
