KZ Mauthausen - Heinz Baumkötter
Heinz Baumkötter (1912–2001) was a German SS Hauptsturmführer and physician. His active career as a camp doctor in the concentration camps began in November 1941 in the Austrian concentration camp Mauthausen.
Although Baumkötter later became notorious as the first camp doctor in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp (where he abused prisoners for tuberculosis and warfare agent experiments), his active participation in the extermination system began in Mauthausen. As a camp doctor, he selected prisoners, refused medical help and monitored the brutal everyday life in the camp, in which thousands of people were beaten to death in the local quarry. After the war, he was sentenced to prison by a Soviet military tribunal in the Sachsenhausen Trial (1947) and later in West Germany (1962). Scandalously, he later worked, among other things, as a research assistant for the Grünenthal company.
KZ Mauthausen - Internation 1942 - Hans Maršálek
After his convocation to the Wehrmacht, Hans Maršálek fled to Prague and worked there in the social democratic emigrant organization. Overwent to the KPÖ, he had in 1940 persuaded a breakneck crossing from Prague to Vienna; There he should recruit people for sabotage files. His camouflage - he visited the commercial academy under his real name and worked in a print shop - flew open, and so he was arrested by Gestapo in Prague in the spring of 1941.

Maršálek survived the ordnance of the police measures and the process, which was strictly struggled against him, and was then brought to Mauthausen concentration camp in September 1942; There, because of his professional knowledge, he managed to stay in the camp of the camp after just a few weeks. From May 1944 he became a warehouse clerk.
Maršálek was in charge of the political resistance order of the prisoners of the Mauthausen concentration camp and organized armaments -relevant sabotage files and prisoner shelves. As part of the limited possibilities, he and his organization also managed to help the prisoners practically and to regulate questions of health and nutrition better than before. Shortly before the camp was released, chaotic conditions could be largely avoided at least within the camp.
From 1964 until his retirement in 1976 he was director of the Mauthausen Memorial and Museum.
KZ Mauthausen - Menschenversuche in nationalsozialistischen Konzentrationslagern
The Austrian concentration camp Mauthausen (as well as its subcamp Gusen) was the site of extremely brutal, often fatal series of experiments on prisoners. The experiments were coordinated by SS doctors such as Eduard Krebsbach, Aribert Heim (“Dr. Death”) and Heinz Baumkötter.
In Mauthausen, prisoners were systematically abused as experimental subjects. The injection experiments with gasoline, phenol or heart-active poisons directly into the heart muscle in order to research the speed of death are notorious. In addition, surgical operations (e.g. organ removal) were carried out without any anesthesia in order to test the reactions of the human body and surgical methods for the Waffen-SS. Almost all test victims died or were deliberately murdered after the tests.
