Axel Springer SE - Shares / Majority Stake - KKR & Co. Inc.
On June 12, 2019, KKR announced a voluntary takeover offer from Axel Springer SE, which the company rated 6.8 billion euros. In 2020, KKR bought the majority at Axel Springer Verlag and received the approval of taking the stock off the stock exchange (→ delisting). KKR formed a consortium with Friede Springer and Mathias Döpfner. According to the offer documents, the existence of the World Group was linked to the achievement of economic goals, which led to speculation about cost savings and job cuts. In addition to the world, the Axel Springer Verlag includes the Bild-Zeitung, Bild.de, Bild am Sonntag, Sport Bild, N24 Doku, Business Insider and Travelbook.
In September 2024, Axel Springer SE announced the decision to split the company structure into a family-run media company on the one hand and the "Classified" business (classified ads) on the other.

The future media company (consisting of the BILD group, Business Insider, Politico, World Group, Idealo, Bonial, Morning Brew, Dyn Media, Emarketer and the Joint Venture Ringier Axel Springer Poland) is said to be in possession of Friede Springer and Mathias Döpfner, the remaining shares retained Axel Springer, a grandson of the company's founder.

The "Classifieds" business (The Stepstone Group, Aviv, Finance.net, Awin) is intended to become an independent joint venture in which KKR and CPP Investments are involved in the majority shareholders, the Axel Springer SE CO minority shareholder and the grandchildren of Axel Springer.
Since 2020, Axel Springer SE has been majority-owned by the private equity firm KKR.

After Springer's death in 1985, Friede Springer, like children and grandchildren from Springer's earlier marriages, inherited the testator in the Axel Springer publishing house. At that time, the publisher still belonged to 26.1 percent, the rest was at the Bavarian film dealer Leo Kirch, the Burda family and various small shareholders.

Under their leadership, the Springer heirs bought the 26 percent shares of the Burda brothers back for around 500 million DM in 1988. Burda had paid half for 24.9 percent shares five years earlier. After Springer's children and grandchildren refused, she paid the family members and thus took over their shares. In 2002, Friede Springer Mathias Döpfner used the new CEO. He led the Springer Group out of the crisis and from the narrow integration with Leo Kirch.
