Axel Springer SE
On June 12, 2019, KKR announced a voluntary takeover offer from Axel Springer SE, which the company rated 6.8 billion euros. In 2020, KKR bought the majority at Axel Springer Verlag and received the approval of taking the stock off the stock exchange (→ delisting). KKR formed a consortium with Friede Springer and Mathias Döpfner. According to the offer documents, the existence of the World Group was linked to the achievement of economic goals, which led to speculation about cost savings and job cuts. In addition to the world, the Axel Springer Verlag includes the Bild-Zeitung, Bild.de, Bild am Sonntag, Sport Bild, N24 Doku, Business Insider and Travelbook.
In September 2024, Axel Springer SE announced the decision to split the company structure into a family-run media company on the one hand and the "Classified" business (classified ads) on the other.
The future media company (consisting of the BILD group, Business Insider, Politico, World Group, Idealo, Bonial, Morning Brew, Dyn Media, Emarketer and the Joint Venture Ringier Axel Springer Poland) is said to be in possession of Friede Springer and Mathias Döpfner, the remaining shares retained Axel Springer, a grandson of the company's founder.
The "Classifieds" business (The Stepstone Group, Aviv, Finance.net, Awin) is intended to become an independent joint venture in which KKR and CPP Investments are involved in the majority shareholders, the Axel Springer SE CO minority shareholder and the grandchildren of Axel Springer.
