Connections

James Cayne - Jeffrey Epstein
The Jeffrey Epstein files released in January and February 2026, as well as previous court cases (notably US Virgin Islands vs. JPMorgan Chase), shed light on the relationship between Jeffrey Epstein and the late Bear Stearns boss James \"Jimmy\" Cayne.

It appears that Epstein and Cayne had known each other since the late 1970s, when Epstein briefly worked at the investment bank Bear Stearns. Cayne was considered one of Epstein\'s early mentors.

Cayne visited Epstein\'s private island in the Virgin Islands in 2011, three years after Epstein\'s first sex crime conviction. He traveled there together with other business bosses (such as Leslie Wexner and Leon Black).

In 1969, Jimmy Cayne was playing bridge full-time in New York City when Alan C. Greenberg, then a relative newcomer to the bridge table, hired him as a stockbroker at Bear Stearns. Cayne became president in 1985, CEO in 1993 and chairman of the board in 2001 (in addition to his position as CEO). He was only replaced as CEO in 2008 and remained with the company until the company was dissolved.
